Announcing the TigerPB-TP3212
« on: July 24, 2010, 12:25:36 AM »
TigerPB-TP3212

The Tiger Protocol Bridge (TigerPB) TP3212 is a small controller for use with RGB LED lights and LED strips that utilise driver chips like the 6803/2801/3005. These are the currently targeted protocols and it is possible that other 2-wire and single wire protocols could be supported with firmware upgrades. This will provide future proofing of your controller.

The initial release will accept a standard DMX512A data stream and provide control for 170 RGB Pixels (510ch). There will be dual buffered outputs that will allow you to split the 170 pixels into say 100/70 and run them in different directions and yet control them as a single 170 pixel string.
Each dual buffered output will also allow for the parallel connection of the same number of pixels allowing for two strings to be used with the same patterns. If these are run in opposite directions they would provide for mirrored effects.
Each of the Dual outputs will be able to drive different protocols if required.

Whilst the controller board will have normal type jumpers to allow for option setting or protocol selection, to allow for fully waterproof sealed use all settings will be able to be made via alternate start code DMX data. Also planned is full Remote Device Management (RDM) support.

The RS485 input is optically isolated to protect the controller. Power supply required is either 5V or 12V. This allows the controller to be used with both RGB Pixel Strings or RGB Pixels without having to worry about additional power cabling.

Features announced as of August 10.

  • DMX512A input
  • Individual control of up to 170 RGB Pixels as one string. Uses up to 510 DMX channels
  • Two separate buffered outputs allows for splitting of strings and independent control of a total of 170 RGB Pixels Uses up to 510ch
  • Strings can be split based on the requirements of the user, for example 68 RGB Pixels on one output and 102 on the other. Controller is then update remotely via software
  • The two outputs can be treated as parallel outputs with both strings displaying the same sequence, still only uses up to 510ch
  • Each of the two separate outputs has is own parallel secondary output. This can be used to duplicate each string output if desired
  • Multiple Protocol support built in with 6803, 2801 supported from the release date, 3005 support is planned but not yet tested
  • Output 1 and Output 2 can be different protocols at the same time, increasing the flexibility for your display
  • Basic configuration is available via jumpers on board, however to access the advanced features remote software management will be provided
  • RDM will also be included in a later firmware release
  • 16Mb of on board memory is supplied, standalone use with inbuilt RGB Effects will be supported as well as triggering of those effects via DMX control (Note: not in initial firmware and will be released in the future)
  • User selectable grouping of RGB Pixels is supported allowing for as few as 3 DMX channels to control an entire string as one lights, note that the number of groups should evenly divide the total RGB Pixels used
  • Ambient light sensor support is included allowing for the controller to know when it is dark and turn on you connected strings
  • PCB is 84mm x 39mm, the small size allows the end user to explore various mounting and weather proofing options
  • All Units will be pre-assembled and be offered both with and without weatherproof cable connections

Cheers
Phil

Phil - this completely rocks!  This item combined with the high count DC controllers and the EtherCon really puts all the parts in place for the RGB Revolution!  I really don't know how you sleep.  :)

I'll put in my order now for five of them - you'll save me from purchasing those 6803 DMX boxes that are not waterproof that I was about to order from Ray.

I'm wondering:
* What type of WP connector might be used (input and/or output)
* Rough price range

Thanks so much for your extensive work on all of these projects - you really are bringing us out of the high-amp AC controller age!

Looking forward to getting a few of these little babies. This will be a whole new direction for the DIY world, all the pieces are coming together to really take advantage of RGB pixel based lighting. Awesome work there Phil and Tabor in coming up with something that will help move the Christmas lighting community to the next level.

is this another circuit board, or is it something for the ecg to do extra?

This is the DMX controller/decoder that runs the pixel strips and strings for the 6803/2801 and maybe 3005 IC chips.

Any idea of cost of components?

Not sure I have the time to mess with it this year, but it will definitely be in the plans for next year!

August 10th.

PCB's have been order to build an initial run of 8 prototypes, Two of these should be winging their way to the USA for display at the Christmas Carolina Convention on August 28th and with just a little bit of luck and no delays they should also be fully working :)

Ed from j1sys will have them with him as he is travelling to the convention to demonstrate the EthConGateway products, ECG-DMXRen8, ECG-DR4 and all it's great and wonderfully useful features.

The feature list has been formally updated in Post 1, so have a read and a glimpse of the future.

Delivery of PCB's due Monday 17th with prototypes built after they arrive.

Firmware development is fully on schedule for the release date of the 28th August.

Pricing will be announced in the next few days, stand by for that one.

Cheers
Phil

This is turning into quite a nice product - even the future ability to play recorded sequences - nice.  :)  Looking forward to this.

Thanks,
David
